Bagheri Kani: Regional, int’l peace and stability not one-way road

The 3rd round of Iran’s diplomatic talks with Italy was held here on Tuesday headed by Ali Bagheri, the political deputy of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Secretary General of Italian Foreign Ministry Ettore Francesco Sequi.
Bagheri Kani in the meeting referred to the economic cooperation and amicable bilateral ties, arguing that the pathology of Iran-EU relations during the past few decades proves the necessity of Europe’s greater efforts aimed at improvement of relations back to an acceptable, sustainable level.
He added that there are important factors in Iran and Europe that necessitate sustainable and reliable relations, but there are external factors, especially beyond the Atlantic Ocean that keep on promoting instable and shattered relations, which is why the strengthening of relations is in a way the mortgage of immunizing them against the external destructive factors.
The political deputy foreign minister added that the international conditions, and especially the great threats against the energy and food security, is in need of continuous interactions and moving towards sustainable Iran-EU cooperation.
He emphasized that there is no doubt about the necessity of joint efforts aimed at campaign against terrorism, but Iran and the EU have different viewpoints about the issue, as well as the different regional and international issues, and this is a reality.
Bagheri Kani said that all the same the differences of opinion and viewpoints can turn into an issue at the service of improvement of mutual understanding and cooperation, and this is also a reality.
He said that there are joint paths for consultations and cooperation on regional issues, asking for practical moves aimed at establishment of peace and stability in Afghanistan and Yemen.
The Iranian diplomat said that the most important historical lesson of the western countries and NATO presence in Afghanistan during the past 20 years is that the regional stability and world peace cannot be achieved through unilateralism and militarism.
The Secretary General of Italian Foreign Ministry Ettore Francesco Sequi, for his part, expressed delight for being in Tehran.
He said that the move is a sign of Rome’s interest in broadening cooperation with the Islamic Republic of Iran.
He said that ignoring the factors contributing to commercial and economic cooperation are not in line with the national interests of the two countries.
The Italian diplomat welcomed Iran’s proposal for broader consultations in various fields, stressing that Italy, too, favors continuous talks with Iran.
He also praised the Islamic Republic of Iran’s humanitarian moves, including in hosting the refugees from Afghanistan and expressed hope for stronger shared efforts aimed at restoration of stability and security in that country.

A Practical Guide to Securing Your Windows PC

For example, you might receive an email asking you to verify your bank login information, but if you look closely at the details, you’ll see that it isn’t actually from your bank. If you get a suspicious-looking email requesting information or login credentials, whether it seems to be from your bank or some other company, verify it by logging in to the account in question directly instead of clicking a link in the email. If the message seems to come from a friend, say, through an email or Facebook Messenger, follow up with your friend on a different platform to make sure it’s legit (or to let them know that their account may be compromised). To see examples of these tactics in action, check out Google’s Phishing Quiz. Freedom of the Press Foundation also has a great explainer, and the FTC details a lot of the most common scams.

Railtel Launches Pm-wani Based Access To Its Wifi Across 100 Railway Stations

NEW DELHI :

RailTel, a mini Ratna PSU, Monday launched Prime Minister Wi-Fi Access Network Interface (PM-WANI) scheme based access to its Public WiFi services across 100 railway stations having 2,384 WiFi hotspots in 22 states.

PM-WANI is an ambitious program of the Department of Telecom (DoT) to connect all silo Wi-Fi networks for ease of use and proliferate broadband usage for the masses.

This public-friendly service was virtually launched by RailTel chairman and managing director Puneet Chawla. C-DOT chairman and executive director Dr. Rajkumar Upadhyay was also present on the occasion.

To access this WiFi network, android users can download the mobile app ‘Wi-DOT’ available on Google Play Store. This app has been developed in close coordination with C-DOT.

This method of accessing Wi-Fi through the ‘mobile app’ would be in addition to the existing method of accessing WiFi at these stations through the conventional method of selecting RailWire Service Set Identifier (SSID), the RailTel said.

PM-WANI-based access will facilitate ease of use through one-time Know Your Customer (KYC) to avoid One Time Password (OTP) based authentication, every time one tries to use WANI based Public WiFi.

The WiFi network of the RailTel is now spread at 6,102 railway stations across the country and has 17, 792 WiFi hotspots, and is still growing.

The government further plans to extend the PM-WANI based access of RailTel’s public Wi-Fi services to all 6, 102 railway stations (where Wi-Fi facility is already available) in phased manner by the end of June 2022. Total 1,000 railway stations by 10 June, 3,000 railway stations by June 20 and all 6,102 railway stations by June 30, 2022.

While launching the public friendly service, CMD Puneet Chawla said, “RailTel being the most widespread integrated Wi-Fi network of the country supporting the largest footfall of Wi-Fi users, is taking an anchor role in entire PM-WANI eco-system, by continuous engagement with regulatory bodies and industry players, to enhance evolving framework”.

The RailTel will extend its WiFi footprints beyond Rly Stations by leveraging its partnership with more than 7,000 last-mile service providers to establish Wi-Fi hotspots in underserved areas, Chawla said.

RailTel is also making a continuous effort in providing broadband internet connectivity to more and more rural areas as part of the digital India mission, Chawla added.

The synergistic engagement between C-DOT and RailTel will spur innovation leading to design, development and deployment of indigenous technologies in national networks including Indian Railways, C-DOT chairman Rajkumar Upadhyay said.

Upadhyay further said PM-WANI hotspots would prove effective in extending cost-effective Internet to passengers at rural and remote railway stations across the country.

PTI gets relief from court

Imran Khan. Photo: The News/FileISLAMABAD: The Islamabad High Court (IHC) Monday provided much-needed relief to the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf by taking up its petitions on a holiday and restraining the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) from harassing the PTI leaders and not arresting Shahbaz Gill on his return from the USA.
The court also restrained the government authorities from taking any further action against the PTI leadership in the Masjid-e-Nabvi sanctity violation case. The IHC, on a petition filed by former information minister and senior PTI leader Fawad Chaudhry, directed the interior secretary to ensure that the PTI leadership was not harassed till May 9, and no further inquiry would be conducted against them till that date. The petition was filed by the PTI legal team comprising Advocate Faisal Fareed and Advocate Ali Bukhari. The IHC issued a circular to hear urgent cases even during the Eid holidays. The IHC CJ fixed the PTI petition for an urgent hearing despite a holiday on Monday, while Fawad Chaudhry was also present in the court. The petitioner pleaded that harassment of the PTI leaders should be stopped immediately. The petition sought orders to bring all cases registered in connection with the incident on record. It also requested the court to inquire about the reasons and basis for which the cases were registered and nullify any action by the police or the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA).
Meanwhile, the IHC barred the police from arresting Shahbaz Gill upon his arrival in Pakistan. Advocate Faisal Chaudhry had filed a petition seeking protective bail for Gill to avoid arrest when he returns to the country. During the hearing, Justice Minallah asked where Gill was currently.Advocate Chaudhry informed the court that Gill had gone to the United States on April 28 and he would come back on May 4. “I have attached Gill’s return ticket with the petition […] he wants to appear before the court and to become a part of the investigation,” he said.He argued that 11 different cases had been registered against Shahbaz Gill and other PTI leaders in Faisalabad, Jhelum and other cities to target them for political reasons.PTI Chairman Imran Khan, party leaders Fawad Chaudhry and Shahbaz Gill and Awami Muslim League (AML) chief Sheikh Rashid Ahmed were among the 150 people against whom a case was registered a day earlier after slogans were chanted against Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and his delegation during their visit to Masjid-e-Nabvi last week. After the incident, former interior minister Sheikh Rashid’s nephew, Sheikh Rashid Shafique, who was also booked in the same case, was arrested at the New Islamabad International Airport on his return to the country.A district and sessions court in Attock Monday granted the police a two-day physical remand of MNA Sheikh Rashid Shafique. The police produced Sheikh Rashid before the court amid tight security. The police pleaded with the court for physical remand of the accused. Judicial Magistrate Jamal Mehmood granted the police request and ordered for producing him in the court on the second day of Eid. The judge adjourned the hearing till May 4.Separately, Federal Minister and senior PMLN leader Javed Latif Monday criticised PTI Chairman Imran Khan, termed him a ‘Fitna’ and stressed the need to crush it with the help of Ulema belonging to all schools of thought.Addressing a press conference here, he blamed the PTI for orchestrating the protest in Madina, which violated the sanctity of Masjid-e-Nabvi. He called upon Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to listen to the voice of the Pakistani nation and take action against those responsible for the disrespectful act. He said former interior minister Sheikh Rashid Ahmed had already disclosed what would happen in Madina. He alleged that the PTI leadership wanted to create chaos and bloodshed in Pakistan. This is a foreign agenda and a foreign conspiracy, he claimed.Meanwhile, Federal Minister for Climate Change and senior PPP leader Sherry Rehman said that not condemning the Masjid-e-Nabvi incident by the PTI chief Imran Khan was tantamount to defending it.In her message on Monday, she said Imran Khan was defending the Masjid-e-Nabvi incident in hushed words and corruption scandals against him openly. Sherry said the narrative of “I am right and all others are robbers and thieves” was causing the worst division in society. Also, Tehreek Tahafuz Namoos-e-Risalat Pakistan (TTNRP) has urged the Islamabad Police to register a case against Sheikh Rashid Ahmed for provoking the people to violate the sanctity of Masjid-e-Nabvi. In a talk with APP, TTNRP Senior Vice President Maulana Sheraz Ahmed Farooqui said Sheikh Rashid was the mastermind of the incident that took place at Masjid-e-Nabvi.He said he had approached the Secretariat Police Station for lodging the first information report (FIR) against Sheikh Rashid with a video tape of his statements given to the media outside the Election Commission of Pakistan on April 26. However, the police refused to accept the application, he added. The Maulana demanded that Sheikh Rashid should be tried under sections 295, 295-A, 109, 296 and the Anti-Terrorism Act.Also, the World Islamic Organisation (WIO) Chairman Sheikh Mazhar Shafi Monday strongly condemned the verbal abuse of federal ministers by PTI workers in Masjid-e-Nabvi and termed it an utter disrespect to the holy mosque. In a statement, he said the PTI workers deeply hurt the religious feelings of the entire Muslim world. He regretted that former prime minister Imran Khan did not condemn the incident, though he had been claiming to make the country like Madina-like state. He demanded Imran Khan to apologise to Almighty Allah, His Messenger (SAW) and the entire Muslim Ummah.

Ukraine news: More than 900 bodies found in Kyiv

KYIV, UKRAINE —
WARNING: This story contains details that are disturbing

The bodies of more than 900 civilians have been discovered in the region surrounding the Ukrainian capital following Russia’s withdrawal — most of them fatally shot, police said Friday, an indication that many people were “simply executed.”

The jarring number emerged shortly after Russia’s Defence Ministry promised to step up missile attacks on Kyiv in response to Ukraine’s alleged assaults on Russian territory. That ominous warning followed the stunning loss of Moscow’s flagship in the Black Sea, which a senior U.S. defence official said Friday was indeed hit by at least one Ukrainian missile.

Amid its threats, Moscow continued preparations for a renewed offensive in eastern Ukraine. Fighting also went on in the pummeled southern port city of Mariupol, where locals reported seeing Russian troops digging up bodies. In the northeastern city of Kharkiv, shelling of a residential area killed seven people, including a 7-month-old child, and wounded 34, according to regional governor Oleh Sinehubov.

Around Kyiv, Andriy Nebytov, the head of the capital’s regional police force, said bodies were abandoned in the streets or given temporary burials. He cited police data indicating 95% died from gunshot wounds.

“Consequently, we understand that under the (Russian) occupation, people were simply executed in the streets,” Nebytov said.

More bodies are being found every day, under rubble and in mass graves, he added, with the largest number found in Bucha, where there were more than 350.

According to Nebytov, utilities workers in Bucha gathered and buried bodies in the Kyiv suburb while it remained under Russian control. Russian troops, he added, were “tracking down” people who expressed strong pro-Ukrainian views.

More violence could be in store for Kyiv after Russian authorities accused Ukraine of wounding seven people and damaging about 100 residential buildings with airstrikes in Bryansk, a region bordering Ukraine. Authorities in another border region of Russia also reported Ukrainian shelling Thursday.

“The number and the scale of missile attacks on objects in Kyiv will be ramped up in response to the Kyiv nationalist regime committing any terrorist attacks or diversions on the Russian territory,” Russian Defence Ministry spokesman Igor Konashenkov said.

Russia used missiles to destroy a facility for the repair and production of missile systems in Kyiv, Konashenkov said.

Ukrainian officials have not confirmed striking targets in Russia, and the reports could not be independently verified.

However, Ukrainian officials said their forces did strike a key Russian warship with missiles. A senior U.S. defence official backed up the claim, saying the U.S. now believes the Moskva was hit by at least one, and probably two, Neptune missiles. Earlier, the Pentagon said it could not confirm the cause of the large fire aboard the guided-missile cruiser. The official spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss an intelligence assessment.

The Neptune is an anti-ship missile recently developed by Ukraine based on an earlier Soviet design.

The Moskva, named for the Russian capital, then sank while being towed to port Thursday after taking heavy damage. Though Moscow did not acknowledge any attack, saying only that a fire had caused ammunition on board to detonate, the loss of the ship represents an important victory for Ukraine and a symbolic defeat for Russia.

The last time such a large warship sank in combat was 1982, when a British submarine torpedoed an Argentine navy cruiser called the ARA General Belgrano during the Falklands War, killing over 300 sailors.

The sinking reduces Russia’s firepower in the Black Sea, although military analysts disagreed on the event’s significance to the course of the war. Either way, the loss was viewed as emblematic of Moscow’s fortunes in an eight-week invasion widely seen as a historic blunder following the retreat from the Kyiv region and much of northern Ukraine.

“A `flagship’ russian warship is a worthy diving site. We have one more diving spot in the Black Sea now. Will definitely visit the wreck after our victory in the war,” Ukrainian Defence Minister Oleksiy Reznikov tweeted Friday in a boast.

Russia’s warning of renewed airstrikes did not stop Kyiv residents from taking advantage of a sunny and slightly warmer spring Friday as the weekend approached. More people than usual were out on the streets, walking dogs, riding electric scooters and strolling hand in hand.

In one central park, a small group of people including a woman draped in a Ukrainian flag danced to the music of a portable speaker.

A renewed bombardment could mean a return to the steady wail of air raid sirens heard during the early days of the invasion and to fearful nights sheltering in subway stations. Tentative signs of pre-war life have resurfaced in the capital after Russian troops failed to capture the city and retreated to concentrate on eastern Ukraine, leaving behind evidence of possible war crimes.

News about the Moskva overshadowed Russian claims of advances in the southern port city of Mariupol, which Moscow’s forces have blockaded since the early days of the invasion. Dwindling numbers of Ukrainian defenders have held out against a siege that has come at a horrific cost to trapped and starving civilians.

Mariupol’s mayor said this week that the city’s death toll could surpass 20,000. Other Ukrainian officials have said they expect to find evidence in Mariupol of atrocities like the ones discovered in Bucha and other towns outside Kyiv.

The Mariupol City Council said Friday that locals reported seeing Russian troops digging up bodies that were buried in residential courtyards and not allowing new burials “of people killed by them.”

“Why the exhumation is being carried out and where the bodies will be taken is unknown,” the council said on the Telegram messaging app.

Fighting continued in industrial areas and the port, and Russia for the first time used the Tu-22М3 long-range bomber to attack the city, said Oleksandr Motuzyanyk, a spokesman for the Ukrainian Ministry of Defence.

Mariupol’s capture would allow Russian forces in the south, which came up through the annexed Crimean Peninsula, to fully link up with troops in the Donbas region, Ukraine’s eastern industrial heartland and the target of the looming offensive.

It’s not certain when Russia will launch the full-scale campaign.

Moscow-backed separatists have fought Ukrainian forces in the Donbas since 2014, the same year Russia seized Crimea from Ukraine. Russia has recognized the independence of two rebel-held areas of the region.

Also Friday, a regional Ukrainian official said that seven people died and 27 were wounded after Russian forces opened fire on buses carrying civilians in the village of Borovaya, near the northeastern city of Kharkiv. The claim could not be independently verified.

Dmytro Chubenko, a spokesman for the regional prosecutor’s office, told Ukraine’s Suspilne news website that Ukrainian authorities had opened criminal proceedings in connection with a suspected “violation of the laws and customs of war, combined with premeditated murder.”

A large explosion also rocked the eastern city of Kramatorsk, where a missile strike on a train station a week earlier killed more than 50 people as thousands heeding warnings to evacuate the Donbas area waited to leave.

Associated Press journalists in Kramatorsk heard the sound of a rocket or missile and then the blast, followed by sirens wailing Friday. It was not immediately clear what was hit or whether there were casualties. A day earlier, a factory in the same city was hit by an airstrike.

The Russian Defence Ministry said Russian strikes in the Kharkiv region “liquidated a squad of mercenaries from a Polish private military company” of up to 30 people and “liberated” an iron and steel factory in Mariupol. The claims could not be independently verified.
